Chompers' Challenge and the Mile High Mile

Chompers (SPREE’s Beaver Mascot) has thrown down the challenge to students from across Metro Denver to get active, get outside, and get involved. On May 31, 2009 students (and adults) will line up at the Mile High Mile to PUSH themselves to run one mile as fast as they can. Trophies will be awarded to the fastest boy and girl miler from each wave. Sign up today to get involved!

Who does this race benefit?

Proceeds from the Mile High Mile will benefit SPREE through the Greenway Foundation. This money will allow us to continue to bring over 5,000 students from across Denver to the South Platte River for kindergarten through 5th grade adventures each year. Best of all, proceeds from this race will help us continue to provide SPREE programming FREE OF CHARGE! Chompers’ Challenge can also benefit your school. Five dollars from each registration, and five dollars from all sponsorships, will come directly back to your school! Click here for more information.

What is the Chompers' Challenge Scholarship Fund

Many of the students at our SPREE Schools are unable to afford the race entry fee or find sponsors for them to participate in the race. In order to ensure that no child is left out, the Mile High Mile Scholarship Fund was created. Eligible students can write letters and apply for scholarships. If eligible, they will be sponsored by donated money and they will be able to run the race and earn Chompers’ Expedition Gear. Please consider making a tax-deductible donation to the Mile High Mile Scholarship Fund! Click here for more information.

What is SPREE?

SPREE (South Platte River Environmental Education) is the educational arm of The Greenway Foundation. Our mission is to inspire meaningful personal connections with nature in order to foster a lifelong sense of pride in, belonging to, and stewardship for our natural world by connecting the children of Denver to the South Platte River through engaging educational experiences. SPREE serves over 5,000 students a year from across Denver. Our main focus is on our nine SPREE schools. Click here for more information.

What is a SPREE School?

SPREE Schools are schools where SPREE and the South Platte River are integral parts of the school’s mission, vision, and curriculum. At SPREE Schools, every student visits the South Platte River at least once per year for a SPREE excursion. In addition to these excursions, the teachers and staff at these schools strive to integrate the river into all aspects of school life. From murals of the river on the walls, to river inspired writing and art projects, the South Platte River provides a constant backdrop for their educational experience. SPREE Schools also participate in special events along the river including fishing days, service projects, and other seasonal activities. The nine SPREE Schools are: Fairview, McKinley Thatcher, Southmoor, Steele, Grant Ranch, Gilpin, Palmer, Polaris at Ebert, and Teller.

Can adults participate?

Yes! The race is open to all ages. Adults may run with their child in the Family Fun Wave (adults and children who run in this wave will not be timed and will not be eligible for the trophies) or may run in the timed wave for their age group.
